The Lower East Side
Girls Club has sold brownies, cookies and cupcakes at a booth in the Essex
Street Market for some time. Now the display also includes apples, cider, fruit
pies, fresh pasta, eggs and tamales, from a new partner, Breezy Hill Orchard in
the Hudson Valley. The stand is called Fresco del Rancho (fresh from the farm).
Elizabeth Ryan (above), the owner of Breezy Hill and a founding board member of
the club, will also sell produce from other upstate farms. The girls’ club
benefits from the sale of its own baked goods.
Fresco del Rancho, in the Essex Street
Market, sells apples, $1.25 to $1.50 a pound; cider doughnuts, three for $2;
fresh eggs, $3.50 to $4.50 a dozen; fresh egg pasta, $4.50 to $7.50 a pound;
and chicken or vegetable tamales, $3. The girls’ club’s goods include cupcakes,
50 cents or $1, and brownies, $2.
